A CENTRAL London-based aparthotel company has given Evening Times readers a look inside their first Scottish property.

Native Glasgow opened in the City Centre this week after a multi-million pound conversion of the old headquarters of the Anchor Line Shipping Company on St Vincent Place.

The opening is a nod to the city’s shipping heritage and has seen 64 apartments, from studio to penthouse spaces.

The project has been completed alongside interior architects, ICA, and the interior has been modelled to resemble the opulence of a 1920s ocean liner.

The Art Deco office building in which the hotel is based, just off Buchanan Street, was first built in 1906.

Glasgow Times:

After suffering years of neglect, the building has now been been restored with many of the original features retained.

The ornate wood panelling, feature fireplaces and crystal glazed windows in the statement rooms aim to imitate a touch of the elegance found on the grand ocean liners of the time.

Glasgow Times:

Two genuine safes have been maintained within the building, while the penthouse rooms offer unparalleled views of the cities skyline.

The windows have also been carefully restored and sourced by the same family firm that fitted them in 1906

The Native Glasgow team said its new flagship Scottish venue will offer a hotel-style service, including a 24-hour reception, concierge and on-site breakfast.

The building’s ground and basement floors are already home to the Anchor Line restaurant and Atlantic restaurant, operated by the DiMaggios Restaurant Group, which are popular destinations for diners at the weekend.

Guy Nixon, chief executive of Native, said: “This was a rare opportunity to reimagine a piece of Glasgow’s shipping heritage as a uniquely special space for the city’s visitors to stay in.”

“We have worked in close partnership with building owners, the White Building Properties Company, to mirror the design ethos and opulence of a 1920s ocean liner.

“Native Glasgow is an exciting milestone in our plans to expand our aparthotel business across all major UK cities.”
