TWO new sculptures to commemorate fallen soldiers from both world wars will be unveiled at the Arrochar and Tarbet war memorial this weekend.

The Arrochar, Tarbet and Ardlui community council (ATACC) is hosting a special event at 11am on Saturday, October 27 to reveal the designs and re-dedicate the memorial, celebrating the completion of a significant refurbishment project.

A storyboard with the names of the 15 men from the area who died during the First World War, and seven who died in the Second, has been commissioned, along with a metal sculpture of a ‘silent soldier’ and a cross.

Sir Malcolm Colquhoun has been invited to attend along with veterans, serving members of the forces and the community.

Ellen Greenwood from the ATACC, said: “It has taken many months of hard work from ATACC members and volunteers to complete this project.

“Luss Estates gifted land for an extension area and we also received grants and many generous donations form the local community.

“The memorial was first unveiled by Sir Ian Colquhoun on December 4, 1921 and the ATACC therefore felt it was appropriate to invite Sir Malcolm Colquhoun to contribute in this service, as his grandfather did.

“We have also invited Rev Louis Bezuidenhout and Father Michael Maloney to participate, as two members of the clergy did in 1921.”

Ellen thanked Gary McAlpine and David Ogilvie Engineering on behalf of the ATACC for producing the quality items, while a bench has also been donated by a local family.
