A HOAX caller to the RNLI in Helensburgh last week has been condemned for potentially putting lives at risk.

The Helensburgh branch of the RNLI, based at Rhu Marina, received a call just after 1pm on Tuesday, November 6 reporting an alleged person in the water at the James Watt Dock, Port Glasgow.

A lifeboat was launched, however, when the crew arrived at the scene they were informed that this was in fact a hoax call which had come from Helensburgh.

The emergency team were back on station again an hour later.

Keith Shipman, press officer for Helensburgh RNLI, criticised the act of stupidity.

He said: “The lives of the volunteer crew are at risk every time the lifeboat puts to sea.

“Additionally, should there have been a genuine call at the same time, someone could have died as a result of the delay.”

Helensburgh and Lomond MSP Jackie Baillie said: “I am disappointed to hear that Helensburgh RNLI received a hoax call this week.

“The lifeboat station services the busy River Clyde and resources are already stretched.

“I hope that whoever is behind this nuisance call thinks twice and realises the potential tragedy that they could have caused.”
