Pupils at an East Renfrewshire school have been cooking up a storm in a special kitchen made just for them.

Mearns Primary is home to Scotland’s first custom-built cook school for primary pupils, featuring work stations which are at a perfect height for youngsters.

The state-of-the-art kitchen also includes a professional oven, dishwasher and industrial-sized fridge.

To celebrate the opening, the school hosted a launch event, where guests enjoyed a meal prepared by the pupils, with help from Chris Charalambous, who is chef patron at Glasgow’s Cail Bruich restaurant.

Councillor Paul O’Kane, East Renfrewshire’s education convener, said: “This facility is a wonderful addition to Mearns Primary and we are very proud to be the first in Scotland to have a primary cook school.

“Cooking is an essential skill that our children will use throughout their lives and it’s wonderful they can learn these skills in an environment designed specifically for them.”
