HELENSBURGH’S Victoria Halls will play host to the “ultimate rags to riches story” next year as the tour of a national production comes to the town in June.

The Benny Lynch Story is a theatre show which tells the extraordinary tale of Scotland’s first ever boxing world champion.

It is a poignant and entertaining look at his life, from his childhood in the Gorbals slums to his boxing success and global stardom, and ultimately to his demise and untimely death in 1946 aged just 33.

The 14-date tour begins in Ayr in May 2019 and arrives in the Burgh on Friday, June 21.

Stephen Purdon, of River City fame, plays Benny, while Holly Jack, who has also starred in Burnistoun and Waterloo Road, plays Benny’s wife.

Simon Weir and Scottish acting legend David Hayman also perform in the play, which is directed by David Hayman junior.
