THE growing importance of peatlands for wildlife and the environment will be the focus of the first talk of the new year for the RSPB's local Helensburgh group later this week.

Expert Rebecca Crawford will describe peatlands' vital role as a wildlife habitat, and a place for carbon capture, where previously they were regarded either as a source of fuel or as a place to be drained.

The meeting takes place at the Guide Hall in Helensburgh's John Street at 7.30pm on Wednesday, January 16, and all are welcome.
