STAR sailor Emma Richards was celebrating last week after being awarded an MBE.

The 29 year-old yachtswoman from Helensburgh was included in the New Year Honours List in recognition of her epic exploits in a 29,000 mile solo round the world race last year.

She became the first British woman and youngest ever person to complete the gruelling Around Alone event, the longest race for any individual in any sport.

During the eventful journey the Glasgow University graduate faced and survived many challenges, including sailing through the tail end of Hurricane Kyle, which led to two thirds of her male competitors heading for shore and safety, a terrifying climb up her 80 foot mast in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and a potential pirate scare.

The MBE has also been awarded for the work she has done in her role as ambassador for the HSBC Education Trust, an organisation which aims to raise standards in education by providing students with inspirational experiences beyond the classroom.
