TODAY'S featured story from the Advertiser's archives goes back 15 years to the crowning of our Citizen of the Year for 2003 – Helensburgh street cleaner Tommy McEvoy.

Tommy sadly passed away in February 2017 following a short illness – what are your memories of a familiar and friendly face from the town's streets?

Here's how we reported on Tommy's award in the Advertiser on January 8, 2004...

POPULAR street cleaner Tommy McEvoy has swept aside the opposition to become our Citizen of the Year.

While the other contenders for the coveted prize, organised by the Advertiser and Helensburgh Garelochside Rotary Club, were well supported, our office was deluged with support for Tommy.

And on Tuesday the Dennistoun Crescent resident was presented with the trophy, sponsored by Alternagas, by Geoff Cartwright from Helensburgh Garelochside Rotary Club.

Tommy retires from his post tomorrow (Friday) and the award is a fitting end to 28 years of service to the local community.

He said he was surprised but delighted to have won and added: “I’d like to thank all the people who voted for me. I will miss the job and the people I meet every day but I’ll probably still see everyone when I’m in the town.”

Mr Cartwright said the award was ‘well deserved’ and added: “He was a popular choice. He is a well kent face around the town.”
