THE Burns Supper season got under way at Helensburgh Burns Club’s celebration of the national bard at its annual supper at the town’s Masonic Hall.

With club president Robert Ryan in the chair and delivering the Immortal Memory, Iain MacPherson MBE gave the toast to the lassies, with Helen Gillan replying for the lassies.

The packed hall was entertained during the evening, with musical performances from singer/guitarist John Young and piper Colin Lawrie, while the club’s vice-president Graham Hill recited the iconic poem Tam O’ Shanter.

Performers Sam Smillie and George Ferguson also provided entertainment with poetry and songs, while speaker David Carson delivered a humorous speech in recognition of Robert Burns.

The club’s next scheduled event is its St Andrew’s Day celebration, which will take place on Saturday, November 16.

New members are always welcome to join the club, and anybody with an interest in the work of Burns can contact the secretary by emailing secretary@helensburghburnsclub.com.
