THIEVES have allegedly broken into Helensburgh Golf Club and stolen historic medals dating back more than 120 years.

The club, which was founded in 1893, reported that two safes were stolen on Sunday morning at around 2.47am, containing four club medals of great significance to members past and present and a small amount of cash.

A social media appeal was posted and widely shared on Thursday evening in the hope of tracking down the culprits and returning the prized possessions to their rightful home.

A spokesperson for the club told the Advertiser the sentimental value of the medals could not be replaced.

"The medals have been part of the club since 1894," the spokesperson said.

"The Breingan medal is the oldest trophy in the club's possession, presented by the first ever captain of the club, Alexander Breingan.

"The Ormond medal dates back to 1912 and the The Junior Paul medal is from 1907.

"The McDonald medal was last played for in 1938. It was held by someone who won it two times in a row, but then it found its way back to the club.

"This year was going to be the first time it would be played for again. It came from New Zealand, so it's very sad that it's gone after finding its way back to the club after so long.

"They were all attractive medals and it's such a shame for the club's history, that's the saddest part.

"They're gone and you couldn't design them again, they're completely irreplaceable."

It is hoped that CCTV cameras within the premises could offer potential leads on any suspects.

The spokesperson added: "Helensburgh generally has had issues with thefts and vandalism and golf clubs throughout Scotland have been targeted recently, but this feels different.

"The thieves have left information to work with and we are hopeful of getting the medals back and catching who is responsible."

Anyone with any information should contact Helensburgh police station on 101.
