A DISTRAUGHT Helensburgh woman is appealing for information to help find a relative's priceless World War One medal which has gone missing.

Catherine Docherty contacted her local MSP Maurice Corry to help her find the lost 1914-15 Bronze Star medal won by a relative in the Great War.

Mrs Docherty submitted a collection of three medals to a roadshow exhibition organised by the University of Edinburgh in 2015, after they asked members of the public to loan their prized possession to create a display.

However, after the exhibit had closed, Mrs Docherty discovered that only two of the three medals had been returned to her despite being assured of their safety.

The Helensburgh resident only made the shock realisation in autumn last year as she brought the box containing the awards back out for another exhibition in Dumbarton.

More than two million 1914-15 Star medals were awarded to British soldiers who served during the conflict.

Mrs Docherty said it is incredibly important that the medal is returned to her.

The caretaker of the exhibit has been contacted, who insisted that she did not have the medal, while the University of Edinburgh also confirmed they had no knowledge of its whereabouts.

Maurice Corry MSP said: “It is a tragedy to hear of war medals going missing in this way.

“Relatives are quite rightly extremely proud of their family’s achievements, contributions and sacrifices that have been made before us.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have attended this event to help shed some light on the whereabouts of this medal.”
