THE Advertiser's Mum of the Year competition was a popular local feature 15 years ago, and the winner in March 2004 was Margaret Brophy.

Here's how we shared the news back then...

LOTS of mums in Helensburgh and Lomond deserve the title Mum of the Year 2004.

But there can only be one winner of the Helensburgh Advertiser’s great Mother’s Day prize.

We featured seven special mums, each of whom had been nominated by at least one of their thoughtful offspring. They all received loads of votes and it was a closely fought race. We are delighted to announce that the winner is Mrs Margaret Brophy, East Princes Street, Helensburgh.

Margaret, a support worker with Enable, was nominated by her daughter Margaret Spence after she stepped in to help out on her wedding day 18 months ago.

Margaret, who brought up her eldest daughter and son Michael as a single parent, gave Margaret Jnr away to be married. She wrote: “My mum has taught me many good strong values and I wanted to show her how much I valued her.

“I want to tell my mum that, when I have a family, I hope I do as good a job.”
