MORE than 9,000 voters in Argyll and Bute have signed an online petition calling on the UK government to revoke Article 50 and for the country to remain in the European Union.

As of Thursday morning the petition had been backed by 9,468 people living in the Westminster constituency represented by the SNP’s Brendan O’Hara – slightly more than one voter in every 10 in the area.

Across the UK, more than 5.9 million people have added their name to the UK parliament’s petitions website, though despite another week of turmoil in the House of Commons, with Parliament voting on Monday night to ‘take control’ of the process, the UK government has insisted it will not bow to the call by overturning its commitment to leave the EU.

At the June 2016 referendum, Argyll and Bute, like every other council area in Scotland, voted in favour of staying in the EU – though with 60.6 per cent voting Remain, and 39.4 per cent backing Leave, the gap in Argyll and Bute was several percentage points closer than in Scotland as a whole.
