A YOUNG Garelochhead-based businesswoman has narrowly missed out on winning the year’s most prestigious award for entrepreneurs.

Laura-Jayne Callaghan of Callaghan Fine Scottish Foods, picked up £1,000 for winning the Dunbartonshire final of the Shell Livewire Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award last month.

This accolade earned her a place in the Scottish final at The National Museums of Scotland where she battled it out with 15 other young entrepreneurs who have recently started up in business.

The £3,000 prize went to an Edinburgh-based company which manufactures medical devices.

Laura-Jayne, 25, launched her range of foods in January 2003, starting with traditional Scottish steak pies made using a secret family recipe.

She began distributing them to shops across the UK from premises in Euston Road in Garelochhead.

Her customer base quickly grew and her products are already on sale in upmarket outlets including Jenners and Harrods which selected her products to feature in their Finest Foods range.

Laura-Jayne, whose cousin Joe owns Callaghan’s butchers in Helensburgh, said she was not at all disappointed to miss out on the big prize, as winning the regional prize was a great achievement itself.

“I was absolutely delighted, I was just amazed to be part of the Scottish final,” she said. “I’m confident in the potential that my business has and the achievements its had to date supplying to Jenners, Harrods and House of Bruar.

“I’m looking forward to expanding my range of products and attracting new customers as well.”
