AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a pupil at a Helensburgh primary school ran away from its grounds this week.

The seven-year-old boy, a pupil at John Logie Baird Primary in Winston Road, was found by police in the town on his own on Tuesday afternoon.

It’s not clear when or where he managed to get out of the school’s grounds unsupervised.

The boy’s mother who asked not to be identified, told the Advertiser: “It was the police who found him, not the teachers – I don’t even know if the teachers knew he had left.

“I was at work at the time but I got a message from the school at about 2.30pm to say he had run away, but that they had found him.

“He later told me had escaped underneath a fence, but I’m not sure if that’s true – I walked round the outside of the school myself and I can’t figure out where he might have got out.

“I’m worried sick about my son, because he has no fear in the world, and he’ll probably try this again.

“The school has gone above and beyond in the way they have taught and looked after my son.

“But that made this news feel like a kick in the teeth.

“Something has obviously gone wrong. However well they have looked after him, I can’t get away from the fact he was able to leave the school unsupervised.”

Asked to comment on the incident, an Argyll and Bute Council spokeswoman said: “The safety of our pupils is our highest priority and we want to reassure parents that we are taking this incident very seriously.”
