HELENSBURGH'S commuters look set for a miserable journey home after ScotRail announced major disruption to services via Glasgow Queen Street low level station.

Damage to the overhead electric wires at Charing Cross station in the city centre was reported at around 4.15pm and saw the suspension of all services via Glasgow Queen Street low level in both directions.

Passengers heading west from Glasgow city centre have been advised to head to Glasgow Central low level station and catch westbound services from there, changing at Dalmuir.

ScotRail said that after an inspection of the damage by Network Rail Scotland engineers, disruption was expected to last until the end of service on Thursday - and recommended passengers should not try to travel on routes normally serving Glasgow Queen Street low level unless their journey was essential.

Shortly after 5pm ScotRail said one replacement bus, operated by Carrs of Loch Lomond, was expected at Helensburgh Central station "shortly".

It's the second time in less than 24 hours that damage to the wires at Charing Cross has caused major disruption to train services to and from Helensburgh, Balloch, Dumbarton and Milngavie.

A similar problem was reported at around 9.15pm on Wednesday, disrupting trains for the rest of the evening – and though Network Rail engineers worked through the night to try and repair the damage, the disruption continued into Thursday morning's rush hour, with Helensburgh trains not running east of Dalmuir.

Services on the West Highland line via Helensburgh Upper are not affected.
