BILL Macpherson is 83-years-old, registered blind and partially deaf and suffers from diabetes and osteo-arthritis - but he has recently completed a charity walk.

Bill, from Helensburgh, joined the recent charity event run by the Deaf Blind Association along the towpath of the Forth and Clyde Canal at Bishopbriggs.

He tackled the five kilometre fun run course with the help of a guide provided by the Deaf Blind Association and completed it in two and a quarter hours, raising £500 for the charity.

He said: “I just wanted to know that I could do it. Sixty years ago I was quite an athlete and took part in events all over Scotland and at the Highland Games and I was once the Scottish 440 yards champion.

“I am more recently the proud owner of a small plaque and certificate for the 5k and I much prefer the latter prize!”

He added: “I am really delighted to have raised £500 for the funds of the charity and would like to thank my many sponsors in Helensburgh for their help, support and encouragement.”
