IT was a helluva weekend for armchair sports people. And many commentators got their assorted knickers in a twist over the scheduling.
How could they have the men’s final at Wimbledon, the cricket World Cup final, the British Grand Prix, the netball World Cup and the final of golf’s Scottish Open on the same weekend?
Frankly, my dears, I didn’t give a damn. My date with Wimbledon was long since in the diary, and nothing which was happening at Lord’s, and most especially at Silverstone, was likely to divert my attention. (Grands Prix have all the allure of the high pitched whine at the dentist.)
As for cricket? Dear heaven. I thought the southern media were going to have a meltdown.
I tweeted a sincere congratulations to the English victors. But that was before every London based ‘news’ programme devoted massive chunks of airtime to the event, barely managing to mention the other great sporting moments, let along squeeze in some gripping world events.
For those of us glued to the gladiatorial masterclass in London SW19, not to mention the many millions for whom the fascination of cricket remains something of a mystery, there seemed a marked lack of perspective.

Donald Trump would have been beside himself!
