HELENSBURGH residents are being invited to help conduct some citizen science this weekend by taking part in a community litter pick.

The Plastic Free Helensburgh group are holding their monthly event on Saturday, September 14 from 3pm to 4.30pm.

Meeting outside Helensburgh Parish Church and starting in Colquhoun Square, volunteers will be collecting and sorting all rubbish from the pick to complete a 'brand audit', using guidelines set out by the Story of Stuff Project, a documentary about the life cycle of material goods.

The data collected, alongside data from similar litter picks around the world, will be used to help build up the bigger picture on plastic pollution, determining which brands are contributing to the plastic problem and who action groups should be targeting.

Volunteers are free to stay for as long or as little as they like and young helpers are welcome.

If you would like to join, you are advised to bring gloves and a rubbish bag. Some litter pickers will be provided on the day, but bring your own if you have one.

See the group’s Facebook page for more.
