It’s another busy weekend of events around Helensburgh and Lomond – with lots to do for people of all ages.

Here’s our round-up of what’s going on in the area in the coming days – if you see something that takes your fancy, why not head along and get involved?

Craft and Coffee with Helensburgh Savoy

A selection of locally-made crafts, along with bacon rolls, home-made soups and cakes, a book stall and tombola, at the United Reformed Church Hall in West Princes Street, Helensburgh from 10am-2pm.

All proceeds will go towards the costs of the Helensburgh Savoy Music Theatre Group’s production of Legally Blonde: The Musical this November.

Entry is £2 and includes a tea/coffee/juice.

Grey Matters

For Helensburgh residents aged over 60, the weekly meeting of the Grey Matters group on Saturday, September 21 will feature the results of a recent survey of slipping, tripping and falling hazards on Helensburgh’s roads and pavements.

The work was carried out by members of the recently-established Police Scotland Young Volunteers group in Helensburgh.

The meeting takes place in the Guide Hall in John Street at 10.30am, with refreshments available from 10am.

Hermitage Academy PTA car boot sale

Taking place on Saturday, September 21 from 11am-2pm at Hermitage Academy, this is a great chance to pick up a bargain or two while contributing to a good cause – and perhaps even stock up on one or two early Christmas presents.

Al the proceeds will go towards supporting the range of extra-curricular activities provided for the Academy’s pupils.

Stallholders will be able to get access to the school’s assembly hall from 10.15am to set up and put their wares on display.

Entry is free, and there’s also free parking at the school.

Beach clean in Arrochar

Taking place on Saturday, September 21 as part of the Marine Conservation Society's 'Great British Beach Clean' initiative.

If you're interested, meet at the car park at the head of Loch Long at 11am - the clean-up will last until approximately 2pm.

Bring along wellies, waterproofs and a sun hat - since the Arrochar micro-climate can change at a moment's notice.

* Note that vehicle parking is likely to be at a premium, since the Arrochar 10K race takes place on the same day (details below) - though the 10K racers and supporters are expected to be clear of the area by around 12 noon.

Sporting action

There’s hockey, football and rugby action in Helensburgh on Saturday, September 21.

Ardencaple FC’s 2007 team have a home fixture at Hermitage Academy at 10am, followed at the same venue at 2pm by Helensburgh FC’s adult amateur team, who have a West of Scotland Cup tie at home to Cambria.

Along the road at Ardencaple, Helensburgh Rugby Club play their first home league match of the season, when Paisley provide the opposition, with a 3pm kick-off.

A busy day of hockey action begins with Helensburgh Hockey Club’s men’s first team, who take on Uddingston’s 3rd XI at Hermitage Academy at 11.15am; that match will be followed by the ladies of Loch Lomond Hockey Club, whose first team face their Glasgow Accies counterparts on the same surface at 1pm.

Arrochar 10K

This weekend sees one of the most popular features of the local athletics calendar - the Arrochar 10K.

Sadly, if you haven't signed up for this year's event, you'll have to wait another 12 months - the 2019 race has been fully booked for some time - but if you'd like to lend your support to the athletes, the organisers would be delighted to see you.

The race starts at 10.30am on Saturday, September 21, and the prize-giving, at the Three Villages Hall, is due to take place at around 12 noon.

Movie night

The next movie night for children and young teenagers with Helensburgh Parish Church takes place at the church’s halls complex in Colquhoun Square on Saturday, September 21 at 7pm.

All are welcome – adults can stay or leave the children.

This month’s programme will feature a great Disney family movie and a 12a film for young teenagers.
