CONSERVATIVE candidate Gary Mulvaney launched his general election campaign in Helensburgh – with a little help from the party’s acting Scottish leader.

Jackson Carlaw joined Mr Mulvaney and local activists at a stall in Colquhoun Square before embarking on the first of many visits to homes in the area in his battle for Argyll and Bute’s votes.

Mr Carlaw said: “Gary is a great candidate for Argyll and Bute and is the only candidate on the ballot paper who will oppose a second independence referendum and deliver on local issues.

“A vote for anyone else will only allow Nicola Sturgeon’s independence supporting candidate in and reverse the good work of Scottish Conservatives in Westminster.”

Mr Mulvaney added: “It was a great day speaking to people and going round doors. The same message is coming through that people are tired of divisive referendums, that they want to get Brexit sorted and return to things that really matter.

“At the last election we were only 1,300 votes short of beating the SNP. No other party can beat them here.

“I would appeal to people to lend us their vote and send a message that we don’t want another referendum – we want to improve things like our health service, education and super fast broadband.”
