A MAN has died following a road accident near Helensburgh this morning - the second fatal car crash in the area within 24 hours.

Police confirmed that a male driver of an Audi was pronounced deceased at the scene of the one-vehicle incident on the A817 Haul Road shortly after 10am on Tuesday.

Officers attended the scene as passengers from other cars nearby were administering first aid to the man, but prolonged medical intervention from ambulance crews and trauma team doctors could not save his life.

Work is ongoing to formally identify the driver and confirm the cause of the crash, while the road, leading on to the A82 along Loch Lomondside, remains closed.

On Monday, a 76-year-old man was killed in an accident involving his Kia Sorrento car and a lorry on the B872 between Garelochhead and the north gate of HM Naval Base Clyde.

The man's identity has not yet been made public.
