AT a Helensburgh primary school named after the town’s greatest innovator, it was only too fitting that pupils led the way during their recent Christmas fair.

The John Logie Baird Primary School event, held last Friday, December 6, was planned and directed by children in P6 and P7, allowing teachers to take a rare step back and watch their bright young sparks take over.

Depute head teacher, Emma Wilson, admitted she was slightly relieved that the event passed with success, having been a long time in organising, and she was delighted with the contribution of all the youngsters involved.

“Unlike some other school Christmas fairs, it wasn’t organised through the parent council,” she said.

“P6 and P7 pupils applied for jobs in different departments and it was run in line with the Curriculum for Excellence.

“For example, the logistics team did a floor plan, measuring the hall and designing the layout;, the quality assurance team created success criteria for the stalls and customer service, and the music team created the order of service for the Christmas by candlelight choir.

“There were challenging moments but they have now learned that planning and preparation gets you the answers you are looking for.

“They have worked tremendously hard to bring this about and when you allow pupils to take ownership and accountability of their work, you see the rewards.”

Around 170 people attended, not including the school’s pupils or staff, and about £1,200 was raised, which will go straight into the school’s funds.
