Our latest stroll down Helensburgh's memory lane takes us back 15 years to a set of commemorative plates for Helensburgh which attracted much scorn for some basic spelling errors.
Here's how we reported on the gaffe in the Advertiser on January 13, 2005...

THEY are a ‘unique and valuable’ collection lovingly created to display Helensburgh’s ‘pride, beauty and tradition’ to the whole world.
An ‘experienced team of dedicated experts’ painstakingly gathered historical and current images of the town before artists created attractive drawings of six places and transferred them onto a porcelain plate, tastefully finished with an 18-carat gold ‘stylish border’.
Pity, then, that the experts couldn’t get the names of the places right.

Helensburgh residents have been left reeling after receiving a glossy leaflet advertising a collection of porcelain plates to commemorate their town.
The six finished products each feature a different place in Helensburgh.
However, thanks to a series of spelling mistakes by Kent-based company Decor Art Creation Ltd, recipients of the leaflet have been left a bit confused as to which lovely place the collection refers to.
On the plates, Shandon Hydro becomes Spandon Hydro, Princes Street has an identity crisis and is transformed into Princess Street, Ardencaple Castle is Ardencafile Castle and Ardencouncil Home should refer to Ardenconnel.

Anne Urquhart of Lomond and Clyde Tourist Association said that when she received the pamphlet she laughed and put it in the bin.
“You would think that they would check something like that, especially if they are saying how special these plates are,” she said.
“It is so wrong and so daft.”
The plates, which cost £14.95 each or £89.70 for all six, are described as being ‘strictly limited edition’ as the company only plan to produce up to 150 sets.
