FORMER Lomond School pupil Rory Hamilton has become the new voice of Scottish rugby on STV.

Rory will already be familiar to Scottish sports fans with his many appearances on STV’s Sunday Rugby show.

But last month he made his live commentary debut when he covered the 1872 Cup matches between Edinburgh and Glasgow – the oldest inter-city rugby fixture in the world.

Before going behind the microphone, Rory worked in production on STV’s Scottish Premier League highlights programme Scotsport, as well as on Setanta’s own rugby show before the station folded in June.

Rory, who was born in Glasgow and raised in Helensburgh, was delighted to finally get his chance to commentate to Scotland’s rugby fans.

He said: “This is the first season I have commentated on the Magners Rugby League programme.

“I worked at Setanta on the Magners League programme before their fateful end before going to STV.

“The feedback we got from it was it lacked a Scottish voice and I just pestered the boss, who I had known from Setanta, to do commentary on the programme.

“I worked on production and I had always thought about moving into reporting. I did interviews for the 1872 Cup matches and I felt I could get into the analytical side of covering the sport.

“I feel with commentary you just have to get lucky and take your chance when they come along - so when I got this chance I had to take it.”
