THE community group behind Helensburgh’s much-admired display of Christmas lights has renewed its appeal for the public to get behind its 2020 display.
The call came as volunteer helpers from the Helensburgh Festive Lighting Charitable Trust took down the displays from lamp-posts around the town to say a final goodbye to another festive season.
The lights have now been taken back to the Trust’s ‘grotto’ for storage and repair ahead of the big day in November when the display will once again bathe the town in a festive glow.
The call came out after the group said they had been left “completely disheartened” after a crowd of some 3,000 people donated less than £300 towards the cost of the lights at the 2019 switching-on ceremony in Colquhoun Square on November 23.

The group warned that future displays were “not sustainable” based on such a low level of public support.
Since then, though, the group has been boosted by the receipt of a donation of £423.90 from the town’s Waitrose supermarket.
In a statement on the group’s Facebook page, the Trust said: “The elves have been hard at work this week taking down our features.

“They have been packed and sent back to the grotto for repair.
“If you would still like to donate £10 you can text ‘XMAS 10’ to 74090 or pop in to the Terrace Coffee House Helensburgh and place it in the donation box.”
