OVER the last few weeks Modern Studies pupils at Hermitage Academy have enjoyed a real ‘political experience’.

A few weeks ago we reported that Jackie Baillie had spoken to the S3 Modern Studies pupils. Every year Ms Baillie gives up her time to talk to the Modern Studies classes in the Academy.

This talk is welcomed by the Modern Studies department as the visit never disappoints. It is both informative and interesting.

On January 15, the pupils had another treat when Annabel Goldie, leader of the Scottish Conservative party, came into class to discuss her work as an MSP and party leader.

This brings to life the learning that is done in the classroom and it gave pupils the chance to ask questions that concern them and their local area.

We interviewed S3 pupil, Mhairi Stewart, to see what she found interesting about Annabel Goldie’s visit. She found Annabel’s talk very interesting and was amazed at how well she had remembered everyone’s name.

She was also shocked at the number of hours per week Annabel admitted to working.

YOUR Radio interviewed three pupils at the end of Annabel’s talk inlcuding Mhairi Stewart and Ben Brown all of whom really enjoyed their experience.

Although these visits were much anticipated and enjoyed by the pupils, by far the most exciting – according to the pupils themselves – was their visit to the Scottish Parliament.

On Friday, January 22, all S3 Modern Studies pupils, accompanied by their teachers, made the trip through to Edinburgh to see the Scottish Parliament for themselves.

They were shown around the Parliament and even saw inside the Chamber where the laws are made and inside one of the Committee rooms, where they managed to sit in one of the seats.

This visit was greatly enjoyed by all pupils and teachers.
