A MAN who punched a police officer on the head and pushed him to the ground in the centre of Helensburgh has avoided a prison sentence.

Stephen Diamond carried out his attack on the officer in West Clyde Street on July 12, 2018.

The 34-year-old appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Friday for sentencing, having previously pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a police officer.

Sheriff William Gallacher ordered Diamond, of Langlands Terrace in Dumbarton, to be of good behaviour and to continue his complance with an existing community payback order already in place for an unrelated offence.

Diamond will appear back in court on May 12.
