THE annual Helensburgh and Lomond Primary Schools Cross Country Championships were recently held in conditions that traditionalists would describe as ‘classic’ with the thick mud making it heavy going.

Nevertheless all four races, Primary 6 boys and girls and Primary 7 boys and girls, over the 1.2 Km course were hotly contested.

A total of 230 primary school children took part from seven of the Helensburgh and Lomond area schools. The cheering and support from the large crowd of enthusiastic pupils could be heard some distance away.

The event was organised by Helensburgh Athletic Club with the help of the Active Schools co-ordinators, primary schools and also supported by the Helensburgh and Lomond Area Sports Council.

Nicola Malcolm, the Argyll and Bute Active Schools manager, made presentations to the first three finishers and first team in each of the races, with all the youngsters receiving a special medal on finishing.

The day was deemed a great success by all and in line with Active Schools ethos and current concerns relating to childhood health and obesity levels in Scotland, it is hoped that the children enjoyed the event and will be encouraged to take part in more daily physical activity.
