MEMBERS of Helensburgh volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew were among the front-line rescuers who took part in a search for two people who reported becoming stranded on a rock on the Cowal coastline this week.

According to a post on the Argyll and West Dunbartonshire police division's Facebook page, the pair, a 32-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, were found at around 11pm on Monday after a search involving local police, road traffic officers, an air support unit, coastguard rescue teams and the Prestwick-based coastguard helicopter as well as RNLI lifeboats from Helensburgh, Largs and Tighnabruaich.

The pair, who reported they had become stranded after going for a walk, were given fixed penalty notices for breaches of the Covid-19 legislation.

Sergeant David Hardie from Police Scotland said: "This was a large scale rescue operation which consisted of various police resources including the Air Support Unit and Roads Policing Officers.

"We also had support from Coastguard rescue teams based in Dunoon, Kames and Greenock. The Coastguard Helicopter from Prestwick was deployed along with RNLI Lifeboats from Largs, Helensburgh and Tighnabruaich.

"Thankfully the persons were found safe and well; however, this incident should be a reminder to all that government guidance around essential travel should be obeyed in order to protect yourself and the emergency services at this challenging time."
