A YOUNG Garelochhead singing sensation has been helping spread some joy during lockdown after her online music videos became an internet hit.

Former Hermitage Academy pupil Nyah Anderson posted a clip on social media late last month of her performing Dame Vera Lynn's wartime anthem We'll Meet Again (click here to view the full video) outside her sun-drenched home while wearing a 1940s-inspired dress.

The 19-year-old's rendition of the classic tune drew many admirers on the Rock the Lockdown Facebook group, which was set up in March for artists to share their own front room festivals and has almost one million members.

Nyah told the Advertiser: "I decided to perform Vera Lynn because I do a lot of singing for the Garelochhead Station Trust, which is for veterans.

"I performed on the 75th anniversary of D-Day for the commodore of the naval base and other current naval officers and veterans and I thought it was a very fitting song for our current time.

"I know it touches many people's hearts, especially the older generation, and there's no better way to spread joy than through music."

A former Highland dancer, Nyah is a woman of many talents and has studied at Glasgow's Academy of Musical Theatre Arts and the Bird College of Performing Arts in London.

After moving back to Scotland she has appeared in adverts for The Voice, sponsored by Giffgaff, as well as a background artist in River City and Outlander.

She has now started up her own music page on Facebook, called Nyah Anderson Music, after being featured on the Pure Gold UK radio station and earning rave reviews online.

"I do write all my own music," she said, "but it doesn't really have a genre, it's my own thing. I write it on piano and guitar.

"I've performed in places like the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Mitchell Theatre and the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock.

"I was thrilled by the outcome of the Vera Lynn video. I woke up and it had been posted for three minutes and had over 100 likes; now it's spread to nearly 1,000 shares and 4,300 likes and I'm not sure how many views but it must be a lot!

"I was just so happy that the comments were so touching with people telling me I had made their day.

"It's made me feel like I made a little difference in these struggling times."
