A YOUNG Highland dancer from Helensburgh has been entertaining millions of people around the world through the power of social media.

But according to her mum, four-year-old Olivia Moffat has no idea how popular her performance has become.

Karen Hendrie got in touch after reading our story about local dancer Abbie Ferguson, whose video of her own Highland routine, danced to the soundtrack of DJ Casper’s 2000 disco hit Cha Cha Slide, has also been watched by social media users around the world.

Karen told us that Olivia had responded to a Facebook post calling on Highland dancers to perform the Highland fling outside their homes at 8pm on Thursday, as part of the nationwide messages of thanks to NHS staff and other key workers.

Olivia, a pupil at the Margaret Rose School of Dance, recently featured in the Advertiser, alongside her fellow students, as part of the dance school’s participation in a virtual version of New York’s Tartan Day parade, after the real thing was cancelled because of the pandemic.

Karen said: “The first Thursday she danced I shared the video of her doing her fling on Facebook.

“It’s since been shared and viewed all over the world and has has more than two million views."

“Being four-years-old, she is oblivious to all the attention she got," Karen continued. "She just thought everyone came out at 8pm to clap for her!

“She just loves to dance and will miss going out on a Thursday night once lockdown is over.”
