People have been warned to avoid a walking path after a "petrol bomb attack" on a van in a village near Motherwell.

Newarthill Community Council took to Facebook that diesel residue and broken glass may pose a danger to community members and their pets.

Emergency services were rushed to reports of a black Ford Transit van on fire in Muirhead Drive in Newarthill around 9pm on Saturday, May 23.

The vehicle was significantly damaged in the incident which officers are treating as a "wilful" attack.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) mobilised one fire appliance to the scene but confirmed nobody was injured in the incident.

The area's community council posted on social media: "Sadly, there was a petrol bomb attack on a van in The Barrat Estate, Newarthill.

"Fortunately no one was hurt but the area has been left with a bad diesel residue and lots of broken glass left from the fire and badly burned trees (that may need to come down).

"Fire services have instructed 'community members' not to go near it, but we had to scrape glass into the side, too many kids on bikes and dog walkers in area."

Glasgow Times:

It was emphasised that diesel residue can burn the paws of pets and could make them "very ill" if any of it is ingested.

The community council added: "Please keep your kids and pets safe until this is sorted."

It is understood the local authority has been contacted to organise a clean up of the area.
