THE Scottish Government has been slammed for its "slow and furtive” approach to relaxing lockdown measures by an MSP from Helensburgh.

Maurice Corry, who represents the West of Scotland region for the Conservatives, said the gradual easing of restrictions is "long overdue".

Mr Corry, who lives in Helensburgh, also claimed there was still a great deal of uncertainty among many business owners, employees and individuals over the new rules – and said that the “incompetence” of the SNP-led government is to blame.

Reacting to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's announcement of the first phase of Scotland's 'route map' out of lockdown, Mr Corry said: “Scotland has now been locked down longer than any other part of the UK, when we should’ve been locked down sooner, had we been told of the first outbreak in February.

“It is right the country is allowed to begin returning to some form of normality.

“The plan outlined by the SNP Government is more or less a delayed version of the UK plan.

“I appreciate there is great concern and worry for many people regarding the virus, but there is now real worry for workers and business owners.

"It is a fine balance, and so far the SNP Government has been slow and furtive.

“We are beginning to learn the reasons for this now, and Scotland is paying the price again for SNP incompetence.

“Hospitals have huge capacity, yet procedures are still postponed indefinitely, businesses haven’t received support and we have been locked down for longer damaging our economy, which affects everyone.

“There are still businesses and individuals who are not sure of their rights and if they have to, or should, return to work.

“I would advise people concerned to look at the Scottish Government website if they are in doubt.

“This announcement is long overdue. It’s good the SNP have followed the lead of the UK, as it’s the correct decision to begin returning to normal while staying alert and using common sense.”

Ms Sturgeon confirmed on Thursday that Scotland will enter phase one of the country's route out of lockdown on May 29.

Measures include permission for non-contact outdoor sport, allowing households to meet one other household at a time out of doors, and being able to sit and sunbathe in local parks.
