Hillwalkers and climbers have been reassured that they will not be prosecuted if they have to call on the services of a mountain rescue team.

The message comes after two people had been charged with culpable and reckless conduct following a rescue call-out near Crianlarich last weekend.

However, Mountaineering Scotland, who has been working with Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR) and Police Scotland, have told climbers and walkers that if they stick to phase 1 lockdown guidelines then they will not be at risk of a fine.

Damon Powell, chairman of SMR, said: “If people get into difficulties in the hills, they should be clear that MR assistance is provided without cost and without judgement.”
