Argos have announced that over 200 jobs will be axed at a Lanarkshire depot. 

Two-hundred and eighteen employees at the Mossend depot will now be made redundant as they have been told the Lanarkshire branch will be closing in January next year.

American firm XPO Logistics is the company behind Argos' distrobution network, employing nearly 100,000 members of staff across 30 countries. 

The Scottish workforce is made up of about 200 XPO staff and 70 agency employees, and 218 jobs are under threat.

Staff were given the news by a site manager on Tuesday, the Daily Record reports.

Group consultations are due to start on July 20.

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: "As part of our plans to bring the Sainsbury’s and Argos businesses closer together, we are reviewing operations at Mossend, subject to consultation.

"We will support XPO in any way we can.”
