Helensburgh's new waterfront swimming pool and leisure centre will be built by a firm from Northern Ireland - Heron Brothers Ltd.
Announcing news of the contract award on Thursday, Argyll and Bute Council also revealed that the cost of the project has jumped again – from £19.5 million to £22 million.
The contract will also deliver strengthened flood defences, altered car parking arrangements, and improved public meeting space for residents and visitors.
The contract award was finalised by councillors at two meetings last month, but a 'standstill' period in the regulations on the award of major contracts meant that the identity of the winning bidder – and the value of the contract – could not be revealed until July 15 at the earliest.
The 'contract mobilisation period' starts today (Thursday), with work on the site due to start in August.
The new leisure centre is scheduled to open to the public in August 2022, after which the existing swimming pool will be demolished and work will start on the new car parking facilities.
Based in Draperstown, north-west of Belfast, Heron Brothers Ltd was established in 1956 and also has offices in Glasgow, Manchester and London.
Helensburgh councillor Gary Mulvaney, Argyll and Bute's depute leader and the authority's policy lead for finance and major projects, said: “The appointment of Heron Brothers Ltd marks one of the most significant milestones of this complex project.
"The award of this contract is the culmination of years of planning, engagement, consultation and due diligence.
