THE owners of a Cardross pub which received a national award for supporting locals during lockdown have called the success "a win for the community".

David Davidson and Kate Wooding, who run the Cardross Inn, launched 'Operation Steak Pie' in May, in partnership with the Cardross Cares volunteer group, to offer free hot meals to vulnerable residents at the height of the coronavirus crisis.

The project ran for around two months and provided more than 400 meals to elderly people in the village, and last week it earned a Best Community Involvement award from the WeDO Scotland SME Business Awards.

'Colour Me Inn', another initiative set up during lockdown to encourage local children to create colourful pictures which were placed in the windows of the pub while it was closed, was also recognised at the virtual awards ceremony on Thursday, July 9.

After comedian Fred MacAulay announced the winners online, David said: "To say we are over the moon would be a huge understatement!

"It was a humbling experience to share a virtual stage with so many inspirational winners.

"This truly was a community effort and Kate and I would like to thank everyone who helped make this happen. It's a win for the community of Cardross for sure.

"Massive thanks to my amazing head chef Paul Bonomi and his team and also to Scott Bryson who is surely the best delivery man in town."

The Cardross Inn, along with pubs throughout the Helensburgh and Lomond area, re-opened indoors on Wednesday, July 15, just over a week after beer gardens across the country were allowed to open.

After welcoming the first customers through the doors this week, David said: "I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from our community and beyond and I can’t thank you all enough.

"It means so much to Kate and I after so many months of enforced closure."
