Like the rest of the town, the activities of Helensburgh Community Council have been significantly curtailed by Covid-19.

As a group we have managed to stay in contact using Zoom. Since March, all our meetings have been conducted this way, and we have instituted a series of ‘webinars’ on local topics which have been well-attended.

The next webinar is on Thursday, September 3 at 7pm, when HCC member Nigel Millar will look at what the 'new normal' might mean for Helensburgh.

Anyone who would like to attend this meeting, or our monthly meetings, held at 7pm on the last Thursday of each month, should contact HCC member Tariq Durrani at tsdurrani@gmail.com and you will be sent an invitation in advance.

The two major volunteering activities of the HCC have been neglected badly due to Covid.

Our work on the shrub beds in Colquhoun Square has re-started and the beds are gradually coming back, while we are looking to conduct a major beach clean shortly, social distancing permitting.

We have been enormously grateful for your volunteer support in the past and we look forward to our continued association in the near future.

Many groups need your support to continue the great work they do in support of the town. The Friends of Duchess Wood is an example. Without community support it and others will find life difficult.

It is astonishing and dispiriting that the work we do in Colquhoun Square uncovers a problem with litter.

The square is a focal point for the town community and visitors alike and litter left lying on the ground instead of being put into the available refuse bins is a poor reflection on the town and its inhabitants.

Please, please dispose of your litter both in the square and at the seafront with care and attention.

Construction work on the Helensburgh waterfront leisure centre has started.

The construction company has a good track record, and the lessons of the CHORD project are uppermost in the minds of the project team.

We have a standing request for community involvement in the project under the Community Empowerment Act 2015, and will liaise closely with the project officer as the project develops.
