A HELENSBURGH mum diagnosed with cancer of the plasma cells found in bone marrow has spoken of her joy in taking part in a local virtual walk to raise money for charity.

Donna Hicks and her family took part in the Beatson Cancer Charity virtual challenge last Saturday, where fund-raisers were challenged to raise money for the leading cancer charity by taking to their local streets.

Usually Beatson hold a community event each year where supporters of the charity come together in a joyous occasion, however with the pandemic putting a stop to large gatherings, the charity had to come up with a new way to raise funds.

Donna, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2014, said: “I wasn’t nervous, just excited that I’d be doing the walk with my close family and friends.

“We had a brilliant time. Everyone was in good spirits. We walked up Sinclair Street to Hill House then walked over the hill to Rhu and home again, via the Rugby Club for a few refreshments.

“I put a JustGiving link on my Facebook page which has now raised over £500 so I’m delighted.

“On Sunday I did the same route again but this time with my friend Alison Sturgeon. Sadly, the weather was rubbish and we got soaked, but it felt great to be out walking for the charity.”

Donna has been a long-time supporter of Beatson after she lost both of her parents to cancer and they were treated at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre at Gartnavel.

“The Beatson Cancer Charity do so much amazing work for people affected by cancer in the West of Scotland,” she continued. “It feels good to support such a worthwhile cause.

“I am going into hospital on August 31 to have a stem cell transplant as part of my ongoing treatment. I’ve received invaluable support from the Beatson Cancer Charity, as have many other patients and families.”
