MEMBERS of the Plastic Free Helensburgh (PFH) group have issued an appeal for more volunteers to join the local recycling revolution.

PFH was established just over a year ago with the aim of supporting local individuals, businesses, community groups and Argyll and Bute Council to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics (SUPs).

Founder Fiona McLeod said the group, set up as a voluntary organisation, has made great progress with events including the Keep Helensburgh Clean campaign which runs until this Saturday, but more helpers are now needed.

She said: “Firstly, we are looking for some leaders: a business group leader, a council group leader, a committee (chairperson, treasurer, secretary), a steering group member from Babcock, a steering group vice leader, and a funding officer.

“Our steering group aims to meet every two to three months to discuss the progress of Plastic Free Helensburgh; agreeing and setting direction, meeting objectives, and completing the application for official Plastic Free Community status.

“Secondly, we are looking for volunteers to support our group leaders – you can volunteer as much or as little time as you feel willing to contribute.

“To help you figure out the areas we need help with, we have: a council group – to work with and petition the council and local councillors on local issues, including passing an eco motion (already in progress).

“This could be attending council meetings, writing letters, organising local petitions and meeting with councillors. This work could also extend to MSPs and our MP if you wish.

“We also have a business group, which is currently a difficult area as they are all working so hard to cope with the relaxation of lockdown, so we probably only wish to highlight the great work our local businesses are currently doing with their responses to Covid-19 and any eco actions they have already taken.

“Eventually, the business group would be looking to survey local businesses about their current single-use plastic status and then encourage and support them to replace or eliminate at least three SUPs.

“Finally, we have a community and events group, which, as well as organising, advertising and hosting a variety of eco events and activities that highlight and promote a more sustainable lifestyle.

“This group is looking to survey local community venues and groups, including schools, about their current SUP status and then encourage and support them to replace or eliminate at least three SUPs.”
