HELENSBURGH’S annual bonfire and fireworks display could still be given the green light to go ahead this year, despite restrictions on large social gatherings remaining in place.

The popular event, a highlight in the local calendar in the run-up to the festive season, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 7, although full details have yet to be confirmed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s Winter Festival, due to be held over the last weekend in November, has already fallen victim to the Covid-19 crisis, however, organisers of the fireworks display have offered more cause for optimism by revealing tentative plans for an altered event.

The usual site at the town’s pier car park is out of commission after building work started on the new waterfront leisure centre but alternative options are being considered.

Jonathan Stanton, member of the Helensburgh and District Round Table volunteer group which has ran the event for several decades, said: “The current state of play is both the pier and pier car park are unfortunately not able to accommodate us. One option that’s been floated is fireworks from a barge on the river.

“We believe this option would allow the display to be viewed from a greater area, thus preventing crowds from gathering in one spot.

“We would like to canvas opinion from the local community on how you would feel about this, would you be happy to spectate whilst observing social distancing requirements?

“To be crystal clear, we’re not making any promises, just wanting to canvas opinion before taking it further.”

Initial feedback on social media was overwhelmingly positive, with most people in favour of the event going ahead in some form.

Jonathan added: “The barge is really the only option just now, but that really depends on government guidelines.

“We believe the Scottish Government have an announcement due on Thursday, September 10 which should give us more of an idea of what challenges we face for this project to go ahead.”
