MORE than £1,700 has been raised for a mental health charity thanks to the sporting efforts of Helensburgh supermarket staff.

Co-op team members took part in a local event to walk, run, swim or cycle a distance of a minimum 80 miles per store between August 23 and 31, to support a nationwide initiative involving other shops across Scotland.

The idea behind it was to contribute towards a virtual circle around the country with a start and finish in Manchester, the Co-op’s home town.

Team manager Ela Latosi said: “The Helensburgh team really got behind the task and ended up doing 1,727 miles, raising £1,757.55 for our charity of the year, Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH).

“All the large stores in Scotland have done 41,198 miles in our North Relay Challenge which is 21 times over the distance originally aimed for.

“The event brought up really positive vibes amongst the staff and turned out as a fantastic team building exercise.

“What is even more important is that, again, we raised an amazing amount of money for SAMH.

"It is extremely important to support initiatives like that, especially these days, when services provided by organizations like SAMH really help a lot of people to function in the coronavirus reality.”

In August, staff at the Sinclair Street branch got on their bikes to raise more than £1,000 for SAMH, while earlier in the year a socially distanced 5k run collected almost £400 for the charity during Mental Health Awareness Week.
