HELENSBURGH’S Scouts have been given a helping hand by defence engineering giant Babcock.

The firm, the MoD’s main civilian partner at HM Naval Base Clyde, designed and built a bespoke drawbridge to access a compost toilet at the Scouts’ campsite on the banks of Loch Lomond.

The bridge can be easily dismantled and removed when the Scouts leave the camp to keep the toilet secure from unwanted visitors when the area is unoccupied.

Kenny Douglas, managing director for Babcock at the Naval Base said: “Babcock at HMNB Clyde has a lot of skilled people, with lots of good ideas. I’m glad that the local Scout Group are going to benefit from those skills, and I hope they get years of use from the ingenious drawbridge design.”

A spokesperson for the 1st Helensburgh Scouts said: “The group is extremely grateful to the Babcock team for designing, constructing and installing a bridge to provide access to a recently constructed composting toilet facility at our campsite at Arden.

“Although Scouting activities have been put on hold since March due to Covid-19, it is hoped that we will be able to use our site again in the very near future when restrictions ease.”
