THE builders of Helensburgh’s new leisure centre have pledged to leave a lasting legacy in the town.

Setting out their vision to local councillors, Heron Brothers gave details of their planned investment in the area.

They also have plans to work with the community and schools while they build the new waterfront complex, a process which is expected to last until January 2024 with the centre opening in August 2022.

Staff from the Northern Ireland-based company, which has an office in Glasgow, gave the presentation to Argyll and Bute Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee on Thursday, September 17.

Shona Young, corporate responsibility manager, told councillors: “Wherever we lay our hat, that’s our home. So we need to embed ourselves in the community very quickly.

“We have significant experience and a very good reputation for building high quality leisure facilities across Ireland and the UK.

“In Helensburgh, we have really started reaching out with our community engagement plan, which is really to deliver added value and growth for Argyll and Bute, although mainly Helensburgh.

“We have already started recruiting and that is the kind of benefit our community investment will bring into the area.

“We have only been here two weeks, but we record all statistics for ourselves and for the council to know how we are investing in the area.

“Over 60 per cent of our procurement has been within 30 miles of Helensburgh, and we have sustained three employees during this contract so far.”

The company is also set to give a public presentation via Zoom tonight (Thursday).
