The National:

IN times of crisis we need reasons to laugh, don’t we?

Thankfully a Labour MSP delivered one last night with a galaxy-brain political take on the Trump v Biden debate.

During the Tuesday night debate between the presidential candidates the US leader threw insults at Biden and consistently interrupted him, making for chaotic viewing.

The president spewed out lies, failed to condemn white supremacist groups, made bizarre claims about climate change and suggested he wouldn’t accept the result of November’s election.

Most viewers came away from the debate feeling pretty miserable that he could potentially secure another four years in the White House. But North East Scotland MSP Jenny Marra widened the discussion with her take on things.

“Trump v Biden ‘debate’ reminds me of the shouting and haranguing tactics of Nicola Sturgeon against Johann Lamont in 2014 TV debate,” she wrote on Twitter. “Tactics designed to drown out reasonable debate and opposition, leaving opponent few options. Too similar for comfort.”

To give the view a little extra credit, Tory MSP Murdo Fraser came along to big up Marra. “Jenny is absolutely right here. Trump has clearly been studying the Sturgeon debate style,” he responded.

SNP councillor Mhairi Hunter was stunned by the post. “Thank you for bringing some laughter and merriment in these troubled times,” she told Marra.

Lecturer Ewan Gibbs said what we were all thinking, replying: “When the UK is governed by Boris Johnson, it takes some reach to argue Nicola Sturgeon is the obvious Trump figure.”

Meanwhile another user commented: “Ok, ok, you can call off the search -  I’ve found the least right AND the least relevant take on the Trump Biden debate.”

Others noted that the post came from one of the Labour MSPs who recently tried to oust Richard Leonard. Marra and a handful other members called for his resignation due to concern over how the party was polling under his leadership.

SNP staffer Rosa Zambonini tweeted: “While some people are finding this quite funny I find it totally mortifying. It’s not dangerous cause it’s ludicrous but it’s absolutely why Labour will never be a force in Scotland any time soon, they cannot shake their old ways no matter the cost.”

And MSP Stuart McMillan said: “Here is yet another example of why the population of Scotland will no longer be duped by Labour.”
