PLANS have been unveiled for repairs to four footbridges crossing the railway line into Helensburgh Central station.

Network Rail has submitted proposals for the crossings on Grant Street, Lomond Street, George Street and Adelaide Street to Argyll and Bute Council.

The plans, which also include the formation of a compound and working areas, are expected to be decided on by the authority by mid-October.

Supporting documents have been published in the council’s online planning portal for the Grant Street and Lomond Street plans.

In the documents, Network Rail said in a statement on the Lomond Street plans: “It is proposed to undertake general refurbishment works to the existing footbridge.

“This will involve strengthening the superstructure to accommodate the loading combination described above by installation of SHS (square hollow sections) over bracing connected to the top flanges of the main parapet girders.

“It is considered that replacement of the parapets with a new compliant arrangement would necessitate replacement of the heavily corroded stair stringers to provide suitably robust support fixing.

“The existing walkway surfacing over the bridge deck and staircase landings will be removed and replaced with a new anti-slip combined surfacing/waterproofing system.”

“Corduroy tactile strips will be installed to the top and bottom of each flight of stairs with the existing stair treads replaced with new GRP anti-slip tread covers.”

Many of the Lomond Street bridge repair plans also apply to the Grant Street bridge.

It’s not yet clear whether Network Rail expects to have to close the railway line to allow the repairs to any of the four bridges to be carried out.

The full plans can be viewed in the council’s online planning portal under the code 20/01696/PNRAIL.
