AS Scotland fans gear up for a major play-off against Serbia, the team behind commemorating the national stadium have called for the game to be shown for free.

The Hampden Collection, which is committed to preserving the site of all three historical Hampden grounds, want fans to be able to watch the game on Thursday, November 12 without having to pay for a Sky subscription.

The group want people to get behind the campaign on social media using the hashtag “#OorLadsOorTelly”.

Barry Kirk, the head of communications at the organisation said: “We can’t travel to the game. The Tartan Army is unable to muster its legions in the stadium, watch it in the pub or gather in homes.

“With a game of this magnitude, unless we fork out a hefty subscription fee or a payment via pay-per-view channels, we will be unable to watch it live. We believe this is ridiculous, so we have started this campaign to try and right this ludicrous situation.”

Next month’s game sees Scotland face off with Serbia for their chance to get to a major tournament for the first time since 1998.

Mr Kirk added: “This is the biggest game of our generation and it’s only right that everyone should be able to see it.

“There’s a lot to be optimistic about so it would be nice to spread some positivity.”

The game will be broadcast on Sky Sports and in normal times, fans would normally flock to subscriber pubs to watch, if they were not going to the stadium itself.

Due to the pandemic, people will be forced to watch the game at home and fears have been raised that games shown behind a paywall will increase the risk of football fans going to one another’s homes to watch matches.

Ahead of the Old Firm game earlier this month, the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon even intervened and pleaded with the broadcaster to show the game for free.

Sky Sport and the Scottish FA were approached for comment.
