Bellahouston Road Runners have won a Scottish Athletics National Innovation Award of the Year 2020 award for the imaginative ways they have kept runners connected to each other throughout Covid19 restrictions.

The club won the 4J Studios Impact and Innovation Club of the Year award for "superb work during lockdown to keep their members connected".

The club has produced viral dance videos, online challenges, online yoga, exercise classes and club nights.

They are now supporting a Scottish Athletics Keep on Running campaign to encourage running throughout the pandemic.

Richard Leyton, Bellahouston Road Runners club president said: “We are delighted to win this award, Bellahouston Road Runners members have been spectacular.

"The restrictions this year have made it difficult for all of us to keep training.

"However, we have done everything we can to try and keep people positive.

"We are helping Scottish Athletics organise a ‘Keep on Running’ campaign to support everyone who has taken up running during lockdown.

"We have seen so many new runners out on streets and we want to support them keep on going.”

Bellahouston Road Runners is one of the largest most active running clubs in Scotland.

They are training in separate small groups following the Scottish Athletics and Scottish Government Covid framework.

With parkrun currently cancelled, there's a gap for a next step for new runners - but Richard said people should feel comfortable coming along to established clubs.

Richard added: “Running groups like ours are very welcoming, and we want to encourage as many as possible to come along and give it a go.

"Our members like nothing better than to pass on their enthusiasm for running.

"Training with others makes a huge difference to the experience.

"The best thing to do when you start a new habit is to find someone to share it with. It also makes it much harder to drop out.”
