A MAN caught driving at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour and crossing onto the opposite side of a road between Cardross and Helensburgh will discover his punishment next month.

Thomas Harris appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Friday, November 20 on two separate road traffic offences.

The 20-year-old, who lives in Main Road, Cardross, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving dangerously and failing to comply with road markings on the stretch of the A814 between the village’s crematorium and Hermitage Academy.

On November 9 last year, Harris drove at excessive speeds of up to 80mph, repeatedly causing his vehicle to cross onto the opposite carriageway.

Harris also pleaded guilty to a similar motoring offence committed on various roads in Dumbarton on March 1 this year.

He drove the same car dangerously at excessive speed on Glasgow Road, West Bridgend and Woodyard Road, failed to stop when requested to do so by a police officer, continued to drive at excessive speed whilst being pursued by police officers, failed to observe a red traffic light signal, and approached a blind corner at excessive speed before braking harshly. He is also said to have driven into a junction at Woodyard Road and crossed into the opposing carriageway.

At last week’s hearing, Sheriff William Gallacher deferred sentencing on both matters until next month to allow social workers time to prepare a background report.

Harris was ordered to return to court for sentencing on Friday, December 18.
